Appcuity Subscriptions
The copy of Appcuity installed on your computer doesn't work in isolation, it is part of an overall system that makes sure you always have the latest data right at your fingertips. Here is a simplified view of the operation of this system.
The master copy of the Mac App Store is maintained on Apple servers. Every evening (California time), a robot on the Appcuity server scans all of the apps in the store. At the time this page is being written (Summer 2011), the nightly scan takes about 1 to 2 hours to complete. (This time is gradually increasing as the number of the apps in the store increases.)
Once the scan is complete the robot takes the new app information, combines it with version and price history that was collected in the past, and combines it into a compressed daily update that can be downloaded to your computer in a few seconds and then accessed locally on your computer at high speed. If you have an Appcuity Pro subscription (see below), the daily update is downloaded automatically either in the middle of the night (if you leave Appcuity running) or the first time you launch Appcuity each day. If you have an Appcuity Lite subscription updates can only occur a maximum of once per week.
Appcuity Lite vs. Appcuity Pro Subscriptions
Appcuity subscriptions come in two flavors: Lite and Pro. The Lite version is free, while the Pro version can be purchased on an annual or lifetime basis. This table summarizes the differences between these two types of subscriptions.
